Perseverance: The Link Between Farming and Professional Golf

Written by Max Sekulic

In any profession, perseverance is essential for success. The way we define perseverance is often shaped by our upbringing, and for me, growing up on a family farm deeply influenced my understanding of the word. Now, as a professional golfer, I realize how much my agricultural roots have prepared me for the challenges of the game.

Golf at the professional level is a relentless test of patience and resilience. The learning curve can be steep, and the game demands constant growth. You must learn from your mistakes, but just as importantly, you need the ability to let go of them quickly. Under pressure, a clear mind focused on the present is essential. The ability to adapt and persevere is what keeps professionals moving forward, much like in farming.

The competition in modern golf is fierce. Players are equipped with the latest techniques, strategies, and technologies, leaving no detail overlooked in their pursuit of excellence. This parallels the world of farming, where success hinges on paying attention to the smallest details throughout the entire production cycle. Whether it’s planning for the next crop or improving the health of the soil, farmers know that the success of a season—or even an entire decade—depends on their ability to stay focused and resilient in the face of obstacles.

In both golf and farming, perseverance is about results and the bottom line. Just as farmers strive to refine their processes to achieve better harvests, golfers are continually analyzing their game, seeking incremental improvements in technique, strategy, fitness, and mindset. The old saying, "fall down seven times, get up eight," rings true. Each setback, whether it’s a bad crop or a missed shot, offers a lesson that moves us closer to success.

Growing up on a farm, I saw firsthand how dedication and hard work don’t always guarantee smooth sailing. Farmers can execute their plans perfectly, but factors beyond their control—like weather or market fluctuations—can turn everything upside down. In golf, it’s similar. A perfectly struck shot can be affected by wind, an unexpected bounce, or even a simple gust that alters the ball’s trajectory. Perseverance, in both farming and golf, is about continuing the pursuit despite these uncontrollable setbacks, all while maintaining the passion and determination that success demands.

The values of the farm—dedication, resilience, and an unyielding drive to improve—are the same values that guide me in my professional career. Perseverance isn’t just about enduring challenges; it’s about continuously striving to be better, no matter what obstacles stand in the way.
