The Small Things That Keep Harvest Going

As harvest wraps up across Western Canada, most conversations turn to yields, quality, and weather. The combines get parked, the trucks are cleaned out, and another season is in the books.

But as the dust settles, it's often the small things people remember most.

This story was inspired by Rhonda Mayerle, with Greenleaf Seeds a longtime seed grower and shareholder with CANTERRA SEEDS who shared a glimpse into what harvest looks like from her side of the table. While operators are putting in long hours in the field, Rhonda spends her harvest planning meals, grocery shopping, preparing food, packing coolers, and making sure everyone on her crew isn't just fed, but well fed.

Harvest meals are about much more than food.

Across the Prairies, there are countless meal makers working quietly behind the scenes during harvest. They are spouses, parents, grandparents, family members, neighbours, and friends. They spend their days planning menus, preparing meals, packing lunches, and delivering food to crews working long hours. Their contribution may not show up on a yield map or in a harvest report, but it plays an important role in keeping a harvest running.

What stood out most from Rhonda's story was the care that goes into every meal. She challenged herself not to serve the same meal twice [reference to how many meals in total?], finding new ways to keep things interesting throughout harvest.

After all, a hot meal at the end of a long day is about more than filling an empty stomach. It's something Rhonda's crew looks forward to. It's a chance to pause for a few minutes, connect with family and coworkers, and enjoy something made with care. It's a reminder that someone is thinking about you while you're focused on the work at hand.

Because taking care of people isn't just about helping them work harder. It's about helping them recharge. Strong teams aren't built on big gestures alone. They're built through countless small acts of thoughtfulness that often go unseen.

A hot meal after a long day.

A favourite dish that shows up at just the right time.

Someone taking the extra effort to make sure you're looked after.

These moments don't happen by accident. They happen because someone like Rhonda takes the time to make them happen.

At CANTERRA SEEDS, we believe it's the small things that make a difference. Harvest meals are a perfect example. They may not be the most visible part of harvest, but for the people receiving them, their impact is anything but small.

As another harvest season comes to a close, we want to recognize and thank all of the harvest meal makers who dedicate their time, energy, and care to supporting the people around them. Thank you for the early mornings, the late nights, the grocery runs, the meal planning, the packed coolers, and the warm meals delivered with love.

Your role may seem small, but your impact is anything but.

Nominate a Harvest Meal Maker

In honour of Rhonda and the many harvest meal makers working behind the scenes across Western Canada, we're celebrating the people who keep harvest crews fueled, supported, and cared for during one of the busiest times of the year.

We hope this serves as a reminder that while they're busy thinking about everyone else during harvest, someone is thinking about them too.
